On June 30, 2016, Willie Kimani, a Nairobi human rights lawyer, his client Josephat Mwenda, and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri, were found dead in the Ol-Donyo Sabuk River in Eastern Kenya. Kimani had been representing Mwenda in a case against a police officer who accidentally shot him in the arm in 2015. Since filing criminal charges, Mwenda had faced ongoing harassment from the police, but chose to move forward with the case. Kimani was a prominent lawyer employed by the International Justice Mission, which launched a global petition demanding a “swift conviction of all involved in the murders of Kimani, Mwenda and Muiruri.” Although four police officers were arrested and charged with the murder, allegations of Kenyan police extrajudicial killings have been reported for years. The murders have sparked local and international outrage and have put new scrutiny on the corrupt police system in Kenya. The World Movement expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and urges Kenyan authorities to conduct a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances leading to the men’s deaths.
