NAYMOTE Calls for International Support for Democracy in Liberia

In October 2017, Liberian citizens voted for a new president in an election deemed mostly successful by international observers. Because no candidate won the required 50% plus one vote, a runoff election to be contested by the two top vote getters was scheduled for November 7, 2017. Before it could take place, however, the country’s Supreme Court delayed the run-off election, and called for an investigation into allegations of voter fraud put forward by Charles Brumskine, the third-place candidate who won only 8% of the vote.

Since the ruling, civil society organization NAYMOTE – Partners for Democratic Development (NAYMOTE) has issued a statement urging the National Elections Commission (NEC) to respect the court’s ruling and conduct a thorough investigation into the situation. Additionally, NAYMOTE called upon Liberian citizens and international leaders to support a democratic and peaceful transition of power in order to prevent any possibility of a return to conflict in Liberia.
