On January 28, 2025, the Center for Civil Liberties, Memorial Human Rights Defense Center and their international partners launched People First!  Anticipating an eventual peace talk over Russia’s war against Ukraine, this campaign is calling for prioritizing the unconditional release of all Ukrainian civilians held by the Russian state; all prisoners of war held by both sides; all Russian political prisoners behind bars for demonstrating against the war; and the return of at least 20,000 Ukrainian children forcibly transferred to Russia. “Freeing all the unlawfully detained and exchanging all the prisoners of war should be an absolute priority. The captives may not last long enough to see the end of the war”- Oleksandra Matviichuk, Head of the Center for Civil Liberties, 2022 Nobel Prize for Peace laureate, and a member of the World Movement’s Steering Committee.
