On August 19, the Nicaraguan government of Daniel Ortega announced the closure of 1,500 civil society organizations in the country, allegedly due to non-compliance with the “General Law of Regulation and Control of Non-Profit Organizations.” With this development, the number of civil society organizations canceled in Nicaragua since the 2018 protests reached over 5,200. The Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy (Redlad) denounces this authoritarian escalation, which not only violates the fundamental rights of association of Nicaraguan organizations but is also part of a worrying regional trend, replicated in countries such as El Salvador, Venezuela, and Paraguay, where governments have adopted similar measures to silence civil society and eliminate any form of opposition.
