Working in a Coalition Government to Advance Reform
March 1, 2020
“Ultimately, if we can stay true to our principles…then the political movement provides opportunity to create change.”
Sivarasa Rasiah discusses building a coalition with other parties before elections, and how to work together once in government. He mentions that change is sometimes slow in government, but that change can still be achieved.
Sivarasa is the co-founder of Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), a human rights NGO. He was elected to parliament in 2008 and 2018. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Rural Development of Malaysia after the opposition coalition won the general election in May 2018.
