Set Them Free Campaign Spotlights 7 New Azerbaijani Political Prisoners
Profiles of seven additional political prisoners have been added to our Set Them Free Azerbaijan spotlight page. Unfortunately, this expansion reflects the escalating measures taken by the Azerbaijan government to suppress human rights defenders, journalists, and religious minorities. One of the most notorious examples is the arrest of Afghan Mukhtarli in May 2017. An investigative journalist, Afghan has written about corruption in the defense industry and within the Aliyev government. He was abducted from the streets of Tbilisi, Georgia by Azerbaijan’s security forces and forcibly taken to prison in Baku. Emin Milli, former political prisoner and director of Meydan TV, recently discussed the government’s tactics to maintain power and what the international community and Azerbaijani civil society must do in response with the World Movement. Watch his interview here.
