Egypt

The #SetThemFree campaign highlights seven new Egyptian political prisoners and activists facing sustained judicial harassment. Amal Fathy is a former member of the April 6 Youth Movement, arrested and sentenced to two years for denouncing the Egyptian government for failing to protect women against sexual harassment in a Facebook video. Shady Ghazaly Harb is a doctor and political activist, detained for over ten months without trial for “humiliating the president” with Tweets critical of the Egyptian government.

Nicaragua

Since April 18, 2018, the government of Nicaragua has carried out a crackdown on its citizens and non-governmental organizations characterized by the disproportionate use of force by police; enforced disappearances; widespread arbitrary detentions; torture and ill-treatment; and violations of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and of peaceful assembly. The government has consistently targeted civil society leaders, and those detained in the early months of the protests remain imprisoned in inhumane conditions. Given these circumstances, the #SetThemFree campaign has designated Nicaragua as a spotlight country. Read more about the situation here.
