The Nairobi based Civil Society Reference Group (CSRG) is demanding that Kenya’s government take stronger action against police officers who have maimed and killed citizens while enforcing the country’s COVID-19 curfew. On the first day of the curfew, March 27, police officers immediately began to use brute force to punish people who were not in their homes by 7 p.m. President Kenyatta issued an apology on April 1 for the police violence, but nonetheless it continued.

The CSRG notes that these instances of mass police brutality highlight how unsuccessful Kenya’s police reforms have been, despite the government making large investments to improve the vetting and training of the police force since 2008.
