On October 17, the World Movement for Democracy held a press conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, to announce the 2024 Democracy Courage Tributes, which will be presented at the 12^th Global Assembly of the World Movement, to take place from November 20-22. This year’s tributes will honor the courageous work of Ukrainian civil society, the pro-democracy movement in Venezuela, Palestinian civil society, and the Ugandan LGBTIQ+ movement. Selected by the Steering Committee of the World Movement, the Democracy Courage Tributes give special recognition to the extraordinary efforts of groups and movements working under particularly difficult circumstances. Previous recipients include advocates for the rule of law in Africa, artists fighting for freedom of expression in Cuba, and the women-led human rights movement in Afghanistan.
