Updates in Detained Sudanese TRACKs Activists’ Cases
UPDATE: After nearly a year behind bars, the Sudanese TRACKs activists have been released! The World Movement for Democracy welcomes their release & stands in solidarity with #SudanCivilSociety.
Last month, three Sudanese civil society activists affiliated with the Centre for Training and Human Development (TRACKs) encountered another delay in their case. Several Sudanese authorities failed to appear in court, which postponed their final verdict session until March 5, 2017. The Sudanese government frequently uses court delays to prolong the imprisonment of activists who have been wrongfully targeted for their human rights work. The TRACKs affiliates have now spent more than 10 months in arbitrary detention. Click here to join us in sharing a solidarity tweet for the detained Sudanese activists and help set them free!
One of the detained activists, Khalfallah Al-Afif-Mukhtar, the Director of TRACKs, is accused of “receipt of foreign funds without informing the authorities,” “dissemination of false information” and “cyber-crimes.” Each of these charges fail to recognize rights protected under freedom of assembly and association, including his right to access resources. Midhat A. Hamdan, a TRACKs trainer, is also accused of “dissemination of false information” and “cyber-crimes.” Mustafa Adam, the Director of Zarqa Organisation for Rural Development (ZORD), faces accusations of “espionage” and “possession and dissemination of official documents” for his association with TRACKs.
